**Position Summary:**
This position is responsible for the security, custody, control of inmates; direct officer post and work assignments; inspect institution departments and functions; assist, instruct and counsel officers in their work; supervise or assist in supervising officer staff on a shift, involving hiring, promotion, discipline and grievance resolution; evaluate officer work performance review and update officers' post orders as changes occur; train or assist training staff in post orders, security procedures, crowd control and weapons; participate in the development, writing and updating of policies and procedures; implement policies and procedures and interpret them to lower level officers and inmates; deal with inmate problems as they arise during institution rounds, see inmates requesting interviews; make recommendations on work assignments; serve as a member of Program Review Committee dealing with programming and classification of inmates; serve on the institution disciplinary committee; conduct disciplinary hearings; notify appropriate individuals and agencies in event of emergency; coordinate security operations; assume the role of chief Security Officer during evening hours, and in absence of the Security Officer.

*Special Requirements*: (1) Persons who are appointed to these positions must meet all the requirements of the entry level Correctional Officer including a background/criminal record check, medical examination, pre-work assessment, drug screen and successful completion of the seven-week pre-service training program and the Supervisory Development Program before they achieve permanent status (the pre-service training program requirement may be waived for those with reinstatement eligibility). (2) Convicted felons must have a pardon or Federal waiver to bear firearms. (3) A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. (4) The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection.
NOTE: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application. The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting. The Department may conduct pre-employment drug screens.
A minimally qualified applicant will have training and/or experience in:
* Experience responding to and handling emergency situations with inmates, such as inmate altercations, medical emergencies, and crisis intervention.
* In a supervisory role; assigning subordinate staff to daily duties and tasks, managing schedules of subordinate staff.
* Experience providing training to others.
* Experience in responding to employee complaints.
